Prison Industrial Complex
If there's a military industrial complex, it stands to reason that the U.S.A. would also have something to put threats to security in, and they call it the prison industrial complex. The U.S.A. has over two million prisoners, amounting to 25% of the whole world's prisoner population. This is quite a disturbing fact, seeing as the U.S.A. only has 5% of the whole world's population. With that, it's not so surprising that the prison industrial complex was invented.
The prison industrial complex (PIC) is, as stated by amplex, “a complicated system situated at the intersection of governmental and private interests that uses prisons as a solution to social, political, and economic problems.” The PIC thrives on the oppressive and discriminatory systems of bigotry, sexism, homophobia, and classism. It covers topics such as human rights violations, industry and labor issues, death penalty, policing, courts, media, imprisonment of political prisoners, media and the elimination of dissent.
The prison industrial complex has been the subject of much research by sociologists, considering it's alarming rate. Some studies have shown that 70% of inmates are illiterate, 80% of prisoners are African Americans, and 60 – 80% of inmates have some history of drug abuse. Some studies have even gone so far as to say that America's PIC does not practice equal opportunity due to the disparity between African American inmates and other races.
